This book fills an important gap in large scale data science.Spark has emerged as the big data platform of choice for data scientists both from the ease of use as well as the performance / optimization point of view. In a few lines of Scala code, Spark allows you to write iterative algorithms that scale out very well. For a data scientist who wants to explore large scale data sets, Spark is a great starting point (this is incredible progress in the Spark community given the project is just about 4 years old). However, Spark itself is moving fast and maturing with time, and Spark and Scala as well as distributed algorithms are typically not in the arsenal of many data scientists today.What this book does is teach you how to think about data science problems at scale, in the context of Spark. By well chosen examples covering both supervised and unsupervised learning, the authors take you step by step from a practical problem definition (say how to recommend music given user's history of music listened to) to what features are relevant, what machine learning algorithm to use and how to tune parameters to optimize the solution and how you can use Spark to do all of this in an interactive / iterative manner. As a bonus, they also point you to well engineered data sets that you can use to follow along the discussion and learn by trying out the examples yourself.By embracing the feature engineering steps and data cleaning/ error handling and tuning /feedback steps, the authors manage to show how real world data science works and how you can do full stack data science using Spark and gain immensely from the interactive nature of the Spark REPL.Overall, I highly recommend this book, and though it is the first book on Data Science using Spark, it sets a high standard for subsequent efforts.

Sure, there are others, maybe more popular books from O'Reilly considering these topics, but the authors of those are using R and Python and the books are not focused on the performance and scalability. The topics are diverse and the authors always use real world datasets. Without any previous exposure or contact with machine learning readers might struggle to understand certain chapters, so I think it's good idea to actually try those examples yourself while reading and Google for further details about the used methods. Many of the chapters end only with basic models, which barely outperform the baselines, so if you want to, there is a lot of space for their improvement and further work.Spark itself provides it's users with APIs in three languages - Java, Scala and Python. This books successfully covers each one of these, although you can feel slight preference of a Scala throughout the book. For Scala starters - they always explain some of the special constructs or syntax features which is in fact a nice thing. Introduction and Appendix chapters provides basic information about the Spark core, RDDs (Resilient distributed datasets) or options of running Spark - whether in cluster (Mesos, YARN, Spark's own) or standalone settings. Throughout the book you can find some really worthy tips about Spark or data analysis - like using other serializer than the Java's default (they recommend kryo), overview of data cleansing and whole machine learning pipeline. To sum up, I recommend this book to every data scientist - because it demonstrates advanced topics like workload distribution and scaling on an enjoyable examples.

It is a so, so book. Examples are okay and the codes provided are "elegant" - certainly the result of spending hours and hours optimizing them; but that is not what a typical Spark users will face in life. The explanations are hurried and they make it very hard for the reader to connect the dots. It seems that the book's intent was right, but the application was woefully inadequate. If you do all the work in the book, you will be very competent at reading csv files - but is about all. The authors have a habit of providing esoteric "helper" functions to clean up the files but you don't really understand what is happening because either the explanations are thin or there is none to be found. A big part of data science is preparing the data - anyone can turn the crank on clean data but how do you go from the start to finish. This was their opportunity and they left a big gap. Spark's ML examples are nicer than what is presented in this book; paying for a book to get minimal information is a bit odd. I was really looking forward to going through this book and I am glad I did; it makes me appreciate authors who spend time writing good books.

As a cardiac nurse and future NP i have a library of cardiac books. This is the best cardiology book i have read. The text is incredibly approachable and detailed. I love the break down of AV node and AV SVT along with other arrhythmias. Every pathological disorder is well explained in a way i use to teach my patients and future nurses. Very good book and a incredible resource for cardiology.

I ordered this book as a companion to my fourth-year Cardiology elective and it was hugely helpful! Although slightly less in-depth than I would like, it does an excellent job of explaining cardiac pathophysiology. Explanations are concise, easily understood, relatively complete, and written in an easy, conversational style. I think this book is likely geared best towards students in their first two years, but still taught me some new things and helped reinforce my understanding of cardiac diseases.

I needed all the help I could get with reading ECGs, and this breaks it down into an easy-to-follow systematic way of reading them and explains the pathophys behind ECG abnormalities really well. Didn't delve very far into the other sections, but it was worth it for the ECGs alone.

I am a Cath Lab Tech, cross trained from a radiologic technology background. I chose this book to learn the pathophysiological reasoning for the things we do in the Cath lab. It is plenty in depth for me, but nothing over my head. I believe this book was key to me having a very easy time with the online RCIS Review course through Spokane Community College and was a big part of why I scored 94% on the RCIS exam.

Fantastic book, I've bought this book 2 years ago for my first year cardiology block at University of Sydney, and it basically taught me everything needed to pass that subject. You could easily read the book in a few days (less than a week), and come to terms with 95% of the cardiology in university. A real page turner, it also has a great narrative as well as the basic clinical knowledge. There is a summary at end of each chapter, which I recommend people to read before the actual chapter to get an overview of the topic at hand. The layout and diagrams are great, easy to understand and uses the right colour palette. The only thing that could be improved is the ECG section, however there are many exclusive ECG books on the market that could fill the void, so that is not a big loss.

I bought this book because I felt like I didn't really understand what exactly the different heart diseases were about (how they they arise, how they can be determined clinically and how they can be managed) from lectures and class notes. And I was very impressed with how this book filled in those gaps and much more. In general, a chapter is broken down to the physiology, pathophysiology and finally treatment/management of a particular disease process such as Hypertension or Heart Failure. It does an EXCELLENT job of explaining heart sounds and ECGs particularly because each of these topics have an introductory chapter discussing the fundamental concepts and an additional chapter or two on the various disease processes. For instance, there's a chapter on the basics of ECGs, a second chapter devoted to how arrhythmias form, and another on the clinically important arrhythmias.This book however, isn't going to help with pathology but it I don't think it's meant to.Bottom line: if you aren't satisfied with the way cardiovascular physiology is taught in school get this!

This book was the best. It states the concepts simply and as succinct as possible without leaving any details out. I used this book to get me through my medical school Cardiology block successfully. I highly recommend it.

Wow this book has been my saving grace for the cardiovascular unit in med school, it does an excellent job explaining the pathophysiology of the heart in a very simple and straightforward manner

Developing novel pharmaceuticals requires nonclinical safety studies on candidate drugs to assess general toxicology (through in vivo experiments), safety pharmacology (effects on major organ systems), and genetic toxicity tests. These data provide risk assessment data that supports progression of candidate drugs from discovery phase through clinical development, to regulatory submission and registration. Traditionally, however, less emphasis was placed on the evaluation of safety issues for projects while still in the drug design phase.
