About the Author
Dr. Liang C. Shen received the Ph. D. degree in applied physics from Harvard University in 1967. He then joined the faculty of the University of Houston in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He served as the Department Chairman from 1977 to 1981. Dr. Shen founded the Well Logging Laboratory in 1979. .He has published a textbook, more than 101 papers in technical journals and conferences. Dr. Shen received SPWLA Gold Medal for Technical achievement in 2001. Dr. Shen has been a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Houston since 2004.

Dr Jin Au Kong received a BS in 1962 from the National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan, and an MS in 1962 from the National Chiao Tung University in Hsinchu, Taiwan. He came to the United States in 1965 and obtained a PhD from Syracuse University, where he continued as a postdoctoral research engineer until 1969. He joined the MIT faculty in 1969, was the leader of the Research Laboratory for Electronics (RLE) Center for Electromagnetic Theory and Applications. Over the years, he also served as a consultant to the New York Port Authority, Raytheon, Hughes Aircraft, Lockheed Missiles and Space, and MIT's Lincoln Lab. He also served as a visiting scientist at the Lunar Science Institute in Houston, a visiting professor at the University of Houston, and a high-level consultant to the United Nations. He has published more than 30 books on electromagnetics and more than 700 research papers and book chapters. Dr. Kong passed away in March 2008.

Best book on the market for equine color genetics

A must have new textbook on the most recent findings in color genetics. Researchers, Breed Associations and owners of horses considered color breeds. Some of those color breeds have serious defects and it is advisable to read up on before purchasing and more to the point breeding with them.

This is an excellent text book but I was disappointed when I purchased the 3rd Edition and it didn't have much more content for the high price of the new edition. If you already have one of these books then save your money and wait for later editions as advancement in color genetics information is crazy right now. If you're looking to buy this book for the first time I'd look for the 2nd Edition at a better price.

dr Sponenberg's books are mandatory for all of those seeking to understand the importance of genetics in the horse and I recommend his volumes to all I know and even to those I never met..I am a recognized breeder of gypsy cobs as well as color AQHA and have been in the horse business for 57 plus years.

I found this book to be very useful, but definitly not $60 worth useful. In all honesty, I have found more information in my 'Equine Genetics & Selection Procedures', which is roughly five times the girth and I managed to nab that for $8. While this book is more up-to-date, and the pictures were extensive in what they covered, it just doesn't have enough to warrant the cost. Maybe if there were more pictures (there's only one chapter of photos) or they were larger (there's three per page), or if the actual probablility of the color (Punnet Square) were covered more fully.... but it's not worth $60 as is. I consider it to be a waste of my money.

If there was any one good book focusing on the genetics of horse color, this book is it! It's the best and most accurate book I have found on the subject, and it covers all equine colors from the basics to the more rare colors. A must have for anyone intersted in horse color research! It even includes donkey colors. HIGHLY RECCOMMENED!
