I was looking for a Japanese architectural reference book and decided, after shifting online through several books, to try this one. I found it to be totally lacking, the pictures aren't well lit or well taken in general, there are lots of artsy cropped close-ups of flowers, shoes and so on? What the book implies is not there, no stunning or even interesting architecture to speak of. This is the first architecture book I've ever bought that just didn't have good shots of buildings, construction details and rooms. A bit amateurish. I've looked it over several times now and boring is about the best thing I can say, useless is the most truthful.

If you ever have visited Japan or fell in love with its architecture via movies or television, you owe it to yourself to get this book.We plan on building our next home and wanted to go in a modern/Japanese look. There are many resources out there for modern homes but very few done as well as this book for Japanese homes. The subtle details and construction techniques presented in here are vital for a designer to see as they develop a design.The photographs are very endearing and present the Japanese home in such a way as to make this book more than just a guide. It also makes for a great coffee table book.If you are into architecture of any type you shouldn't pass this book up for your library.Highly recommended!Thank you for reading my review.

In his labyrinthine and surprisingly engrossing epic of literary influence and translation, Thirlwell (Politics) provides an idiosyncratic perspective on a wide range of authors and books, from Don Quixote to Dancing Lessons for the Advanced in Age by Bohumil Hrabal. A leading young British novelist, Thirlwell creates narrative enthusiasm and vividly drawn characters in a welcome departure from the academic approach to this kind of project. His technique is generally conversational rather than thesis driven, and his dips into notoriously tricky works like Ulysses and Tristram Shandy are characterized by impressively observed but plainly written close readings in the vein of the popular literary scholar Harold Bloom. One of Thirlwell's basic conceits is that style is inherently translatable, "even if its translation is not perfect," and he argues this earnestly and convincingly across eras and borders. Some of Thirlwell's arguments will undoubtedly cause debate among critics and readers, such as his defense of Constance Garnett, the original English translator of War and Peace, whose work has been criticized and possibly superseded by recent high-profile translators. Ostensibly devoted to the problem of literary translation, this provocative treatise rambles through the Western canon from Cervantes to Bellow, treating novelists less as subjects than as characters in a sprawling intercontinental epic. Thirlwell revels in the anecdotal (Italo Svevo studied English with James Joyce) and the serendipitous (the French word dada was invented as an equivalent for "hobby-horse," in " Tristram Shandy"); presents indexes whose entries include "hamburgers" and "squiggles"; and lauds digression as the best means of capturing the "serious nothings" of life. While acknowledging the difficulty of conveying the "perpetual giggle" of Akaky Akakievich Bashmachkin’s name in any language other than Gogol’s Russian, Thirlwell insists that translation is possible and, to that end, offers his own version of Nabokov’s "Mademoiselle O," evoking the story’s trilingual origins in fittingly verdant prose.

About the Author
MARYANN CUSIMANO LOVE is an associate professor of politics at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. where she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on international relations and US foreign policy. Cusimano Love also teaches courses at the Pentagon. The author serves on several boards and committees: The U.S. Catholic Bishops' International Justice and Peace Committee, where she advises the bishops on international affairs and U.S. foreign policy, and engages in advocacy with the U.S. Government on international issues of concern to the Catholic Church. The Advisory Board of the Catholic Peacebuilding Network with Notre Dame University's Kroc Institute of Peace, a network of academics and practitioners from around the world that seeks to enhance the study and practice of peacebuilding. The board and Advocacy Committee of Jesuit Refugee Services, an international refugee relief and advocacy group active in over 50 countries, with a mission to accompany, serve and defend the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people. Cusimano Love is also a columnist for the magazine "America", and has served as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations project on homeland security, and as a participant in the Religion and Foreign Policy Initiative. She holds a B.A. from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, an M.A. from the University of Texas, and a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. I have spent a considerable amount of time and money researching books that would provide a comprehensive, creative, and intuitive education in structural engineering. Sadly most of the books I found were dry and virtually impossible to creatively apply, or very creative but devoid of any science. I was pretty much set on reading a handful of dry books (with my eyelids taped open if necessary) and supplementing it with a handful of creative books (with constant reference to the dry books) and hope that I could start seeing and thinking properly. One chapter into this book, plus a perusal of the other chapters, was all it took to clear my shelf and focus my efforts on learning from this book and its online companion materials. It has it all, and it explains it all in a way us non-textbook people can both understand and get excited about studying. Yeah that's right - this book will make you WANT to learn structural engineering.This book is for enterprising product designers, architects, or others interested in knowing how forces interact with structures and how creative thought can minimize effort and material while creating a structure that can withstand the forces applied to it. It is long and thorough so do not expect a light treatment. Buy with confidence and use for life.

This book won't make you an architect or a structural engineer, but it opens a lot of doors. Good teaching approaches abstractions with specific problems, visual hands-on models of the intangibles involved, and clearly explained pragmatic solutions. From the first chapter--designing simple suspension bridges and calculating the loads with a visual representation called a force polygon--Allen takes you through a variety of forms, explaining simply and clearly the practical considerations underlying choice of materials and connectors as well the structures within which they are used. An architect's choice of scissors trusses to support the roof of a church is analyzed and found wanting, and replaced with (of all things) a simpler, less costly, and more effective tension structure using steel chain. The magnificent bubble-like dome over the courtyard of the British Museum is explained in terms of the structural efficiency which makes it so strong, though so light.No number crunching needed--by the end of the book, you should be able to design pretty good commonsense structures by doodling on a napkin.

When this ebook was put on my kindle the graphs and formula's came out black. As per request of amazon support I redownloaded, and the proble persisted. Also the format doesn't let you konw what page your on compaired to the book, which makes it difficult when the professor says on page... You might want to stick with the book over the ebook.
